- Great Rose for Beginners and Busy PeopleReview by Sharon
I live in Georgia, where my roses have been through terrible heat waves, droughts during which I make sure they didn't die via a trickle hose, and out of season ice storms. Most of all, they have fared through my being a busy veterinarian whose care of her roses is highly variable. Sometimes they get pampered, but sometimes they get neglected for months on end. Droughts and ice storms do make me step up to the plate, but sometimes I charge off to work in the morning seeing their leaves steadily disappear from some insect (?) eating on them during the night. By the end of the day I'm too tired to go take care of them and stop the insects.
Through all of this, Distant Drums and Lyda Rose have held out, making blooms for me every year. The Apothecary rose has come in a close third. My rose garden is on the east side of the house, next to the house, so they get direct sun in the morning. The Lyda Rose and Apothecary rose are at the north end of the garden and live mostly in shade. All of the others roses have either died, or are very weak and small. I can't bring myself to pull them up, thinking that someday I will have the time to take proper care of the rose garden.
Before I got the email of Distant Drums being available I had already been thinking that that was what I should get in the future, because it has proven itself to be so hardy. Maybe someday I'll have the time to nurture my current one so that it gets huge, like Katie's, but for now I am thrilled that it survives my neglect, and the awful Georgia weather of July through September, and still remains a decent size and gives me blooms.
