Mulching Matters

There are many important things we do for our roses such as watering, fertilizing, pruning, and keeping pests and weeds at bay. Mulching , however, can sometimes easily be forgotten, yet it is just as critical in keeping roses happy and healthy.

Bob Martin, Vice President of the American Rose Society, Editor Rose Exhibitors’ Forum says, "During her development as a top exhibitor, a good friend once commented to me that her visits to the gardens of the top exhibitors in Southern California revealed but one significant constant: everyone uses a heavy layer of mulch around their roses. This is true. Our feeding and spraying programs differ, as do other horticultural practices. But mulch is pretty much a constant, and the reason is simple – mulch is very important in growing good roses.”
