Heirloom Roses 100% Natural Mint Compost, 5 Pound Bag

Mint compost is excellent for providing moisture retention in sandy/dry soils while rich in natural humus to help break up hardpan clay soils. Mint compost may also be used as a mulch top dressing around shrubs and in other garden areas. When used with Roses, Mint Compost is a natural agent that helps repel aphids, spider mites, and other damaging insects.

Spread the compost evenly for efficient use of the nutrients. One 5 lb bag is enough for five roses, or using as a top dressing in containers or around the plant.

Aphids go away!Review by Susan
Rating
I am a new rose grower in zone 5. I was intrigued by Heirlooms write up about mint compost. I bought a small bag to check it out, then ordered the large bag for my new Crown Princess Margareta climbing rose, which I planted in my foundation garden among a lot of native plants including butterfly weed, which seems to attract aphids. Sure enough, I had aphids galore but not a one on my new roses. This is such a better choice than chemicals. (I only hose them off, anyway) I will be ordering more come spring. Thanks for such a great product! (Posted on 11/14/2018)
Definitely Worth ApplyingReview by Gardener in PNW

I live in Hardiness Zone 7a in the Pacific Northwest - eastern side of the Cascades. I was quite upset when in early May I realized a had a bumper crop of aphids on my roses. I tried some home remedies, but no luck in getting rid of the aphids. I received an email from Heirloom Roses a couple weeks later with the following: "Mint Compost is excellent for providing moisture retention in sandy/dry soils while rich in natural humus to help break up hardpan clay soils. Mint compost may also be used as a mulch top dressing around shrubs and other garden areas. When used with roses, Mint Compost is a natural agent that helps repel aphids, spider mites and other damaging insects. . ." I decided to try it. I am very pleased that I did. Shortly after spreading the mint compost around my roses, I noticed a definite decrease in the number of aphids. With in a couple of weeks the aphids were totally gone. My roses did beautifully this past season. I fully intend to spread mint compost around my roses next season, too. I highly recommend using this product if your roses are infested with bugs. Hail the Mint CompostReview by Zones 9-10 - Mint Compost

I ordered a lot of Mint Compost this Spring, in hopes of keeping the bugs in check in my Zone 9-10 world, where it doesn't freeze and the bugs never die. To test the claims of the lauded Mint Compost, I used it in the front of my house and NOT in the backyard.

The spider mites feasted on the roses in my backyard, where there wasn't a trace of Mint Compost. The front had a lovely year with neighbors stopping to comment on the roses.

I am not sure that my gardener will keep me as a client, as the spider mites were so bad in the back. He kept sending me texts as if I was personally responsible for the pests eating my roses. A couple weeks ago I finally used Dr. Bronners Castile Soap (Mint, of course) and that seemed to do the trick for the mites, at least for a time.

Yes, the Mint Compost is expensive and I, too, wish it were less. However, with 10 bags at around $400, I figure I am still ahead; I saved so much money not buying Horticulture Oil and Neem Oil and that other one with the orange label to spray away the mites in the back.

The moral of the story: buy Mint Compost for the front and the back next year. (Posted on 10/12/2018)
Do try thisReview by Roseykat

After discovering this product on Heirloom, I did some research on why I should try this. Yes, it is a bit pricey but I decided that I had some roses that needed some help and spread this around them. The vigor that followed was amazing. Description talks about insect repellent. I cannot speak of that as I spray for chilli thrips here in my Zone 10 garden, So Cal area. I used this around miniature roses last year. This year, I am trying to use this around all the roses.
