Margaret Merril®

Type: English Legend

This beauty is one of the most fragrant of all roses. Rated number one for fragrance by England's Royal National Roes Society ahead of all of the English Roses. Also rated in the top 4 among all cluster roses along with 'Icberg' and 'Sexy Rexy' (neither of which are fragrant). Peter Beales calls it "a superb rose". Its exquisite clear white 3 1/2" blooms (petals 29) are produced in small clusters on a sturdy continual blooming plant with dark-green foliage. If you are looking for a very fragrant white rose this is it. Winner of 5 Gold Medals.

Fabulous fragrance, color and shape.Review by Michele T

Just purchased this rose this Spring from Heirloom. This rose is delicate in shape and color opening white with a light peach cast on center. It is so beautiful and the fragrance is one of the best I ever smelled of all roses. As all my roses from Heirloom it is doing well. I can see it's magnificence increasing as it grows larger next year. Not a dense petal rose but I like it just the way it is. This is my all time "white" rose favorite. (Posted on 7/22/2017)
The perfect rose!Review by Amma

At one point I had 24 different roses, some David Austin, some Old Roses, a few chosen purely for their color or fragrance, and 3 Margaret Merril for my front yard which is SE facing and literally sunblasted all afternoon, only morning shade. I have had lavender wilt in the sun in this area, but this rose LOVED the sun, loved the heat, loved apparently the location. In the spring and later in the coming fall (it blooms thru to November) the white blooms are actually pink to blush white and pink! Cooler the weather the more pronounced the coloring. And the fragrance will send you over the moon. It hangs in the evening air, coming in through an open window; a single bloom will fill the room for days; and unlike so many of the Austin roses, these blooms will not 'shatter' within a day or two. They make excellent cut roses for bouquets, formal or informal, especially when thrown together with a mix of herbs (ex. sprigs of borage, salad burnet, and lavender) - they just need decent care (ventilation, no crowding, be attentive about japanese beetles, I pick them off as I won't use chemical sprays) and the ONLY negative I have found is simply finding this rose! I always seem to be on waiting lists! I have also learned to go with own root roses (mine were grafted and sadly I lost the battle with them after about a half dozen years). I've had many lovely roses, but this one IS THE BEST! Fragrant beyond words, coloring that is delicate and nuanced, appealing shape that vary from bud through bloom, long lasting cut roses, honestly, they SHOULD BE IN EVERY GARDEN CENTER!
