Jude The Obscure®

Type: David Austin

Named for the 19th century novel by Thomas Hardy. Blessed with magnificent fragrance, 'Jude the Obscure' 4" blooms (petals 40+) are large, cupped, old-fashioned, and of the highest quality and beauty. A lovely shade of rich, soft apricot, the outer petals of the fully double blooms may show a blush of pale yellow. Very free flowering, the blooms are produced on a strong, vigorous, well-shaped bush with mid-green foliage. It received the Corona Regina Teodelinda Perfume Award in Monza, Italy. Mr. Austin says "'Jude the Obscure' produces some of the most superb blooms you have ever seen" with the added benefit of its lovely, strong and unusual fragrance of lemon/myrrh and peach. Makes a good cut flower.

If you buy only one rose in your lifetime, Jude is it! Review by Randee

Remarkable...best rose ever!Review by dailysinger
I bought this rose the first year it was offered at Heirloom Roses. I did not give it the best start and nearly lost it a couple of times - due to my poor siting and watering. Once I got it in the right place, it has been a trooper - huge bush, amazing blooms - a globe of deep apricot that opens to a paler full flower., fragrance that fills the room and is really lovely - not overpowering yet powerful. This rose blooms all season if you keep the spent blooms pruned. The best rose grown in Portland, Oregon...the Rose City! (Posted on 5/28/2018)
Jude the Obscure - never ending blooms Review by Claudette
I planted this near our patio door with morning sun. It’s just blooming whole summer and smells so good. I will recommend it if you’re looking for easy to grow English Rose. (Posted on 5/25/2018)
The One Rose To OwnReview by GigiinSEA
My mother and I have planted a Jude the Obscure rose from Heirloom Roses at every home we have lived in - going back over 20 years. We have lived in Zones 6b to 8a and Jude returns each year to bloom profusely with her amazing perfume. Thankfully, we've never had any of the typical rose problem issues with Jude and we always plant her in full sun. My neighbors in Seattle always stop by when walking to enjoy her fragrance. If I could only own only one rose, Jude would be my choice. (Posted on 5/11/2018)
AMAZING! I'm so thrilled with my Jude the ObscureReview by Jennifer
Let me tell my zone 1st because it really helps me so much when other reviewers do. I am in south Georgia, an hour away from Savannah, zone 8b. I received Jude on March 12, 2018 & he started putting on leaves immediately & growing taller & fuller. 3 weeks later I spotted a bud, still green but a bud & I haven't even repotted or planted him yet. I'm so excited. I have to admit when I read other reviews saying they had buds, blooms, lots of foliage & etc. soon after receiving their rose I really didn't believe it ... Jude the Obscure has made a believer out of me! I love shopping w/ Heirloom Roses, they are super in every way & packaging of roses is just perfect. (Posted on 4/6/2018)

Awesome fragrance!Review by Awesome
Zone 6 I bought this rose several years ago. I dragged it from Fairfax to Fredericksburg in November and it survived and is great. Amazing fragrance and beautiful cupped shaped blooms. I rank this up there with Abraham Darby (my favorite). It's beautiful (Posted on 3/31/2018)
My favorite rose!Review by Susan
I had one of these beautiful roses in Portland, Oregon so when I moved to the southeast I had to get two for my bigger yard. The fragrance is amazing so one planted it near a living room window and the other by the front door. (Posted on 2/7/2018)
Most Fragrant Rose EverReview by Dclaet
Living in the hot Central Valley, zone 9 in California, this rose absolutely thrives here. The fragrance is like no other rose in my collection. The colors (I have a few of these) range from champagne to apricot. The blooms are large and full with thick petals.People often stop and praise the scent of this beautiful rose bush. You will not be disappointed. (Posted on 1/17/2018)
My favorite rose for all time!Review by ParrotQueen
I bought this rose quite a while ago - maybe even 10 years ago or more. When people come into my yard, they get to Jude The Obscure and they stay planted right there - smelling and admiring the blooms. And it blooms vigorously from early spring until fall,. This is one of the most stunning roses I have ever seen. I'm adding a second one to my yard. Don't miss this one!

A must have rose for your gardenReview by Sharon from Queens, NY
Received this plant in April. I am glad that I bought this rose because the fragrance is just simply amazing! It is growing quite well and healthy in a container...waiting to plant it near a garden room I plan to build in my backyard. Makes quite a statement in a vase filled with Café-au-lait dahlias - as well as Cloud 10 and Memorial day roses! I just purchased Lexy and I know I will not be disappointed. (Posted on 11/19/2017)
good roseReview by Hatt
I was a hard year for roses in the northeast-- cool with lots of rain-- and I am a rose neophyte so JtO was not in the best hands. It didn't bloom a lot but looked healthy, pushing up lots of shoots and leaves and, as fall clears the air, it is absolutely burgeoning. I'm still on a learning curve but Jude is giving 200% to the effort. (Posted on 10/22/2017)
Fantastic RoseReview by Psquared
Lost its foliage to black spot after first planting it in spring, but brought it back with insecticide and organic fertilizer. It's now vigorously healthy and has three blooms in its first year, even though it is October! Absolutely gorgeous, delicate rose with a unique soft color and intoxicating perfume. Worth the money, time and wait. Five stars! (Posted on 10/2/2017)
Gorgeous Blooms and Devine FragranceReview by Michelle
This is only my first year growing roses and purchased 5 varieties from Heirloom Roses, two of which are David Austin roses. I can see why David Austin roses has a fantastic reputation and following. I live in zone 6 south central Pennsylvania. This summer has been exceptionally wet with mild to moderate temperatures. I have a black spot problem and was plagued by Japanese beetles. Jude the Obscure, however, showed no sign of disease and went unnoticed by those nasty, destructive beetles. I prevented the rose from blooming most of the summer as to let the plant establish which seems to have paid off. It is now autumn and I have allowed a couple blooms to mature. WOW! The blooms are gorgeous and the perfume is exquisite. I can't wait till next year! (Posted on 9/29/2017)
Tough and LovelyReview by christine
I purchased Jude The Obscure based on many reviews that promised what I had been dreaming of in a rose, beauty, fragrance and vigor. Then, due to urgent structural repairs in my yard, I had to keep Jude in its pot for three months. During that time, the little baby plant bloomed twice and the enticing fragrance encouraged me to keep hoping for the best. There was no mildew, no black spot and no yellowed, shriveled leaves despite the wettest, most humid summer on record. I finally got to plant it in a good spot and it began to take off. New leaves came in about a week and I am now so hopeful that it will survive and endure the zone 6 winter and come back refreshed and ready to thrive as a much-beloved rose in my garden. Thank you, Heirloom Roses for this tough, lovely little rose. (Posted on 9/22/2017)

A very special rose.....Review by "Mo"
'Jude the Obscure' is very special. Newly planted, it's just begun to bloom, but what
a bloom!!!---so soft and lovely. I must say, "Grow baby rose, grow...I want much more
of you." (Posted on 7/21/2017)
BeautifulReview by Howard
I've had Jude the Obscure at my previous home for several years, and I loved it, despite the fact that I hindered it by planting it in a place with too much shade. So I wanted to give it a better shot at its glory at our new home. I planted it just this March, so it's still young. And it's thriving in a full sun environment, right next to where a new sidewalk will be. I'm looking forward to tantalizing pedestrians as they walk by, hoping that they'll mostly smell the sweet fragrance and be captured by its color and fulness. Way to go, Heirloom! Best of all my roses - Jude The ObscureReview by ParrotQueen
I've lost count of the roses in my yard. But of all my roses, Jude the Obscure is my favorite, and everyone who comes to the garden goes starry eyed when they meet Jude the Obscure with roses hanging off. It makes the best cut flower by your bed - and when the petals fall off, I sprinkle them on my pillowcase for a sweet, scented, relaxing sleep. A woman from our local Rose Society just visited my yard last week, and I thought she would never leave my Jude. I've had this rose bush maybe six years or more now. The fragrance is mesmerizing and the roses look like big, fat peonies. (Posted on 5/21/2017)
