An excellent, although not widely known, rugosa. Large, violet-crimson, double blooms with wonderfully strong fragrance. Like many rugosas this one will produce both hips and blooms together in late summer. Rose hips are sometimes referred to as the fruit of the rose and this is very true in the instance. Its edible hips are very large and purplish in color and Louise says that are quite tasty, much like plums. Repeat blooming and hardy zones 3-9.
